Coronavirus: France racism row over doctors' Africa testing comments

Two French doctors have been accused of racism after a TV debate in which one suggested trials in Africa to see if a tuberculosis vaccine would prove effective against coronavirus. During the debate on TV channel LCI, Camille Locht, head of research at the Inserm health research group, was talking about a trial in Europe and Australia. Jean-Paul Mira, head of intensive care at Cochin hospital in Paris, then says: “If I can be provocative, shouldn't we be doing this study in Africa, where there are no masks, no treatments, no resuscitation?” “A bit like as it is done elsewhere for some studies on Aids. In prostitutes, we try things because we know that they are highly exposed and that they do not protect themselves.” Dr Mira had earlier questioned whether the study would work as planned on healthcare workers in Europe and Australia because they had access to personal protective equipment to prevent them catching the virus. “You are right,” Dr Locht responded. NCDC records 23 new cases of coronavirus

The new cases include nine from Lagos, which still remains the epicentre of coronavirus in Nigeria, seven in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, five in Akwa Ibom, one in Kaduna and Bauchi states respectively.

Coronavirus-positive man escapes from isolation centre

A commercial driver who tested positive to coronavirus in Niger State has escaped from the isolation centre in Bida where he was being managed.  Similarly, one of the returnees from Côte d’Ivoire, simply identified as Alaska, who Osun State Government had kept in an isolation centre for a test for the virus, allegedly sneaked out of isolation in Ejigbo to socialise with friends in town. These came on a day the state recorded a spike in the number of 12 confirmed Coronavirus cases with nine new infections, bringing the total of infected persons in the country to 151. Edo State, which had two cases before yesterday, had its number of confirmed cases rise to two. Ekiti had earlier in less than 24 hours discharged its index and only case after recovery of the patient.  Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, confirmed the cases.
